The following lyrics are from a Telugu song in a film that was released recently: 35 - Chinna Katha Kaadu by Nanda Kishore Emani. Music of this film is by Vivek Sagar and the Lyrics have been penned by Bharadwaj Gali.

One of the finest songs to be written in Telugu in a long time, bringing in the cultural and religious ethos to the public, this song has once again showcased how heavily popular culture borrows from our epics, and how much we are indebted to our itihāsa purāṇas. In doing so it serves as a bridge between our civilizational cultural world and the younger generation, raising their soundaryabodha to higher planes, via poetry and philosophy.

భావం: inner meaning

ఎందుకు ఈ వేళ సీతాదేవి మనసులో నీలినీడలు కమ్ముకుంటున్నాయి? కళ్ళలో సముద్రపు ఘోష కనిపిస్తుందేమిటి?

రేపు స్వయంవరంలో గెలిచేవాడు, యుద్ధరంగంలో శత్రుసైన్యాన్ని ఛేదించే గొప్ప వీరుడే కావచ్చుగాక, కానీ అతడు సీతాదేవి అలిగే వేళ తన భృకుటి ముడిని ఛేదించగలడా? సైగ మాత్రం చేత, వందల కొద్దీ సైన్యాన్ని నడిపే ధీరుడే కావచ్చు, కానీ సీతాదేవి మనసు లోపలి మాటలను గ్రహించగలడా?

సూర్యవంశోద్ధారకుడు, శౌర్యమూ కరుణ సమపాళ్లలో కలిగిన శ్రీకరుడు వాడే కదా ఎంత పెద్ద బాణపు దెబ్బనైనా తట్టుకొనగలడు కానీ, సీతాదేవి శోకిస్తుంటే తను స్థిమితంగా ఎలా ఉండగలడు? అందుకే సీతమ్మను చేరి, స్వయంగా లాలించ, రాజ్యాన్ని వదిలి కదిలాడు కదా…!

Though there is no one fit to face the greatest person in the universe in combat, But when the lotus-eyed one is cross, can he bend the bow that is atop her forehead [her eyebrows]? With a mere wave of the hand, he can commandeer legions of soldiers, but Can he understand the words (thoughts) behind the one whose voice is of the earth and whose braid is of Mithila?

Charanam

The cloud that caresses the waters of the ocean… And the droplet of rain traces the contours of the path. This swayamvaram (marriage of choice) is an illusion, It is impossible to make one’s own choice. In the time when two minds must be tied to one another, What measurement (test) is wielding Shiva’s bow?

He is the one who has a heavenly abode, He is the small child that rules over everything, He changed himself into a musical note, And himself sang a lullaby.

One who is adorned by the Sun, the brave one who is also kind, and the one who gives auspiciousness, He cannot remain calm amidst the grief of the earth’s daughter.

He is not one that flinches even when pierced by an arrow, But he will serve and caress Lakshmi (Sita), leaving pomp and circumstance behind.

In the floating clouds, the light of the earth… In the depths of the eyes, the sounds of the ocean.

Situation

Prior to her svayamvaram (ceremony where she is to choose her husband), Sita Devi is lost in thought about her husband-to-be and whether he will be endowed with virtue. This song is written from her perspective at this stage.

Explanation

At this pivotal moment, why is Sita’s mind being clouded by negative thoughts? Why is the din of the ocean visible in her eyes (i.e., why is she crying)?

The one who will win her in the svayamvaram tomorrow can vanquish the enemy forces in the battlefield with ease, but can he vanquish (remove) the furrow of her brow when she is distraught? He can mobilize infinite armies at a moment’s command, but can he understand the feelings within Sita’s mind?

These fathers are also not helping matters! Just like a cloud gathers up water from the ocean and tenderly “raises” it, only to release it onto the floor in the form of rain, are fathers, too, not the same? The fathers of a daughter raises her with great love and affection, but can they control what kind of husband she will receive? Even this idea of a svayamvaram is illusory; it is a “svayamvaram” in name alone, for one cannot marry the person of their choice. What relevance does wielding Shiva’s bow [the test that the king Janaka, Sita’s father, puts to Rama] have in determining whether two minds can meet?

How strange! The one who has come for the contest (svayamvaram) is the one who lords over the universe with a childlike, innocent smile and lives in the heavenly worlds! And that he has come face to face with her and has sung a lullaby for her, for her fears to vanish!

Is he not the scion of the solar dynasty, endowed with bravery and courage in equal measure, and the giver of auspiciousness? He can bear even the severest of injuries from being struck by an arrow, but how can he bear to see Sita weeping? That is why he has left his kingdom and come to her to comfort her himself.

Seeing Rama, Sita floated amongst the clouds! Like the sound of the waves of the sea, her eyes were filled with tears of joy.
